Whistling Kite

The story of the Fire Hawks or Whistling Kite comes from Cape York and the Northern parts of Australia, although there is evidence that Aboriginal people knew of this fire-bird all around the dryer parts of Australia.
This bird is known to be the only hunting bird in Australia that uses a tool, being fire, to set the grasses and dry woodland areas alight to force small mammals, lizards and small birds to flee into open areas where flocks of the hawks wait to swoop. The hawks do this by picking up embers and small sticks already alight and dropping them into dry unburnt areas where the scrub catches alight.
Australian pastoralists and land owners over the years have also been concerned at the rate and places in which fire started, this possibly due to these birds.
