Pelican Lake

This painting refers to my grandmother’s clan and country, the Kuku Thaypan from Musgrave Station, Cape York and surrounding area, where she was born. She and other relatives always mentioned Pelican Lake and it was considered very important to the Kuku Thaypan people.

The pelican is known as one of the most maternal animals on Earth – it will even peck at its own chest to draw blood to feed its chicks if there is a shortage of food. Aboriginal people follow their maternal side, as it is said we always know who our mothers are through a spiritual maternal thread which enables communication even though far apart.
