Making Ochre

It shows the ochre coloured clays and charcoal collected in a coolamon before being ground by the stones on a grinding stone. Traditional ways of making ochre include using blood and egg as binding sticky agents mixed with water to make a thinner painting consistency that withstands time. This painting was inspired by a grinding stone that is currently on a track at a revered Rock Art site at Laura, Cape York. I am sure that many people on their travels to the rock art pass by this important feature not realising what it is.
