Yams are an important food source for Aboriginal people even today. Women are primarily the caretakers and cultivators of this food. Ceremonial activities are performed around Australia each season for good growth and sustenance. In hard times sometimes the only food that could be found were yams although rainforest and Cape York communities were blessed with a Wet Seasons which create abundance.

Many of us may not realise that we actually buy Yams , Sweet Potatoes etc, from the supermarkets, in fact any tuber is considered a Yam by old standards.
