Kookaburras are fierce protectors of their young and the parents are together for life. They are also the Spirit protectors from dawn to dusk. Their friends, the owls then take over the watch of country from dusk to dawn. When we hear the kookaburras laughing, they are wel-coming the day and then in the evening they invite the Evening Star and the owls to watch over the night, after which they will sleep for the night.

This painting depicts the Southern Cross in the background. Now known by the Wardaman people of Northern Australia, as a small dilly bag full of knowledge, songs of knowledge that were passed on.
