Road to the Future

This painting depicts a road leaving from the Dreamtime to the Future in keeping with the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair 2023 theme of ‘Weaving Our Future – Claiming Our Sovereignty’. It is meant to show that Aboriginal peoples can create a future from the Dreamtime continually moving forward as a culture and a group.

The two different feathers representing the red-tailed black cockatoo and the white cockatoo are totem animals of older relatives now passed. These people were the keepers of traditional culture for our ancestral tribal group, the Kuku Thaypan of Cape York Peninsula. The road itself is derived from an image on the rock art walls of Split Rock in Laura, Far North Queensland, known for its World Heritage listing.
